The main components of any Access Control System are the locks, the card readers, the system controllers and the software. The system controllers are the invisible part of the system to the user but provide a vital role in the operation of the access control system.
Controllers are normally installed close to the doors. They receive data from the card readers and a local database is used to check access rights and control the doors. The controllers allow the access control system to continue working in the event of power or network failure across the facility.
There are two ranges of system controller for the Symmetry system:
M2150 Controllers
The multiNODE M2150 range of controllers provides distributed intelligence for your access control system and ensures complete system security, resilience and reliability.
When integrated with Symmetry security management software, the M2150 controller range delivers a seamless security management system to protect all types of buildings while maintaining a low cost of ownership.
At the core of a standard access control installation is the M2150 database controller (DBC), an intelligent controller with built in database and support for 2, 4 or 8 card readers. Expansion of the system is simple using remote door controllers (DC) that offer the functionality of the DBC without a database onboard, up to a maximum of 16 doors. Expansion beyond 16 doors is achieved by installing additional DBCs and DCs as required, providing solutions that can scale up to many thousands of doors. Each DBC can manage 20,000 cardholders, and this can be increased to a maximum of 250,000 (1 million with use of EN-DBU) using plug-in memory modules.
The M2150 DBU offers the ultimate in flexibility and system design architecture by delivering database intelligence with connectivity to remote door controllers.
The M2150 range of controllers provides a resilient and fault tolerant access control solution that will continue to operate in the unlikely event of database server or network infrastructure failure.
Using additional input or output modules and controllers the M2150 range can be extended to manage a number of applications, including alarm monitoring.

EN-1DBC Edge Network Controllers
The EN-1DBC Edge Network Controller is a key feature of an access control system. It provides distributed intelligence, resilience in the event of network failure, and fast response to access requests.
The EN-1DBC Controller supports a full range of reading technologies including Magnetic Stripe, Smart card, Proximity, Biometrics and Wiegand.
The Symmetry Edge Network Controller can be powered using Power over Ethernet or locally via a 12VDC supply. When powered using PoE, 700ma is available for reader and lock power.
The major benefit of the EN-1DBC is reduced installation time - as no separate mains power is required. Time saving of one to two hours per door can normally be achieved, significantly reducing the installation cost.
The Symmetry Edge Network Controller is supplied with a small polycarbonate enclosure. The enclosure has a removable lid and tamper switch as standard.
The Symmetry Edge Network Controller supports connections to the system database via the Local or Wide Area Network. Direct network discovery and programming using the Symmetry software provides simplified installation. The Symmetry security management software is used to set up the rules of access control, monitor alarms, produce reports and administer one or more facilities.
The Symmetry Edge Network Controller is supplied as standard with memory for up to 50,000 cardholders and 10,500 offline transactions. The Symmetry Edge Network Controller incorporates Flash Memory supporting downloadable firmware, simplifying upgrades and minimizing installation time.
